Buckel Bar – Al lado gay
By Holly Joan
Medellin may not be the first place you think of when you’re making a list of gay friendly places, but a huge wave of underground openness is sweeping the city. The upcoming generation of Piasas are a lot more open and friendly to homosexuality. It may still seem like kind of a joke to them, but there is now a respect that was never seen here before. A new club is making the face of this movement approachable and fun.

Gay or straight, from the moment you walk into Buckel you will feel a welcoming atmosphere that is like any other you find in this city. The staff is friendly and when I spotted the Britney Spears music videos projected on the wall, I knew I found a fun and exciting place to party. Only one block away from Parque Lleras, Buckel Bar has a great location with plenty of room to party.

This is one openly gay bar. Two naked man in a hard embrace, the logo for the club could easily make the most open person blush. Still, Buckel is a place that anyone can feel safe while partying. Buckel’s still underground appeal means that no one is getting molested on the dance floor. It is the perfect venue for get-togethers, and it has huge potential to be the premier gay bar in the city of which there are about 6 principal gay-friendly clubs/bars.
The house band plays a wide variety of rock and pop hits in Spanish and in English, to inspire just about anyone to party it up. You’ll get the typical bottle service, with a shot and a bottle of mixer delivered to the table with a cup of ice. The cocktails are priced similar to the clubs in Barrio Colombia.
Buckel is by far a great place to meet up near Parque Lleras. It is open every Friday and Saturday, and for those looking for the after-party, they were open until 4am the night I was there.
