Medellin – Best rent deals in the world?

Numbeo, the internet’s largest database regarding cost of living worldwide, just released a report about the most expensive places to live in the world; Medellin was not on their list. However, Medellin did turn up on as one of the best bargains in the world.

Check it out here and here.

While this does bode good news for those who are in town temporary renting (i.e. students, the 3 month party animal) for those who live and work in Medellin, rent is still relative to the wages one makes, and I would argue that Medellin is not the easiest place in the world to set up shop. In fact, many of my colleagues have given me the following advice regarding The Arepa Magazine, “Robin, if you can make it in Medellin, you can make it anywhere in the world…Paisa’s are a shrewd bunch with rough business savvy; this is the world’s business school.”

Rent

For a little snapshot on rents, I’ll give a review of what I have paid over the past year. I had a huge one bedroom apartment in Poblado for $1,250,000 pesos (about $625) each month including utilities, and later a two bedroom apartment (shared) with all utilities for $550,000 (about $275) in Carlos E. Restrepo. I had a private room in a house in Laureles with utilities included for $450,000 pesos (about $225) and finally I was sharing a three bedroom house in Villa Hermosa (above el centro) and the whole house rent was $600,000 without utilities (about $300).

Looking for more rent info? Check out www.compartoapto.com. It is like a craigslist roomshare listing but it is really hit or miss. I visited some families who were going to put me next door to their 6 year old kids in a tiny room in a secluded barrio, and another was living in some guys garage for $100 dollars. On the other hand, I have seen some splendid, marvelous and comfortable set ups for a quarter of the cost of the states. Like anywhere in the world, you’ve got to shop around because amongst rent, there is no standard price and there is always a gem waiting to be found and some weirdo to avoid.
